Travel Medicine

Schedule an appointment with a travel medicine doctor before traveling outside the U.S. Schedule here today or call 713-442-TRIP (8747)

If you’re planning a trip abroad, whether for business or pleasure, don’t let health problems ruin it. Visit our travel medicine and immunization specialists so you stay healthy while traveling.

Our specialists review how your medical history relates to your particular travel plans. We’ll research where you are traveling and share with you the most up-to-date information, including:

  • Recent local health concerns.
  • Availability of healthcare in the area.
  • Immunizations and medications: What you may need and when you need it.
  • Dietary advice: What to eat and what to avoid.
  • Potential political unrest and other safety issues.
  • Follow-up care upon your return.

Because some immunizations and preventive medications need to be taken months before your plane leaves the ground, move scheduling your pre-travel appointment to the top of your travel checklist.

Travel Immunizations

When planning a trip, the last thing you want to think about is illness. Immunizations are one of the best ways to protect yourself from serious diseases, many of which can be life threatening. The purpose of a vaccine is to stimulate the body's defense system in order to prepare it for a future encounter with an infectious disease.

There are three types of immunizations: Routine, Required and Recommended

Routine Immunizations
All adults should update these routine immunizations every 10 years, even if there are no plans for travel:

  • Tetanus and Diphtheria

Health Tip: Certain health conditions can dramatically increase a traveler's risk. If you are pregnant or have a chronic medical condition such as allergies, asthma, diabetes or epilepsy, be sure to consult a healthcare professional or a Kelsey-Seybold Travel Medicine Professional prior to departure.

Required Immunizations
Some countries will require proof of these immunizations before entry:
  • Yellow fever
  • Meningococcal

Recommended Immunizations
Depending on your itinerary, planned activities and current health status, your healthcare professional may recommend one or more of these immunizations:
  • Poliomyelitis
  • Influenza
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Typhoid
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Meningococcal
  • Rabies
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella
  • Yellow fever

If traveling with children, additional vaccines may be required for them. Consult with their pediatrician or Kelsey-Seybold Travel Medicine professional.
